Installing and Using the Cisco VPN Client
With the
increasing concern for security and privacy on the Internet, some campus
network resources are more closely protected these days. So Computing Services is implementing a
Virtual Private Network (VPN) to offer more secure and reliable access to the
campus network.
The Lehigh Group VPN provides the following benefits to users:
- Access to the Lehigh Group, Leslie Lock, Loew Cornell
and JCS networks
- Encryption of data over vulnerable parts of the network
The Cisco VPN
client software helps to make the connection between your computer and the rest
of the Corporate network more secure, and lets corporate computers know who you
are. You will need a “domain account” to use the client.
Downloading and Installing the Client
- The client software is available on
CD-ROM at the Help Desk, and on the HTTP server at:
Windows:
http://employee.lehighgroup.com/employee/vpnclient-win-msi-4.8.01.0300-k9.zip
- Whether you download the file, or use it
from the CD-ROM, simply double-click it to install it on your machine. In most cases, the process is similar to
installing any other program on your computer.
Windows NT®, Windows®
2000 and Windows XP Users:
If you are using Windows NT®, Windows®
2000 or Windows XP, you must be logged in to your computer with an account that
has administrator privilege to install the client successfully.
- The Cisco Virtual Private Network client
will take you through a simple wizard to configure the software. Simply click YES or Next
on each of the wizard screens to proceed through the installation. You should
not need to change any of the default settings.
- Once the installation is complete, you’ll
need to restart your machine. Be sure to do this before proceeding.

Using the Cisco VPN Client
The Cisco VPN
client does not make a physical connection to a network for you; it does not
dial the telephone. It works with
whatever connection you already have, whether Ethernet on campus, cable modem
service (e.g., RoadRunner), DSL, or dial-up.
- Shut down Microsoft Outlook and close any
remote file folder windows. Once you’re logged into the VPN you’ll be able to
reopen these items.
- Save following file
http://employee.lehighgroup.com/employee/LehighVPN.zip to the following
directory: C:\Program Files\Cisco Systems\VPN Client\Profiles
. To do so Right-Click on this link, "Save Target As..." Select "Save as type" to be "All files" and browse to our directory
- Enable your Internet connection and start
the VPN Client.

- The connection dialog will look like
this:

- The client software comes configured with
a number of profiles, two for each of five campus domains. One of each pair is for a “regular”
(Ethernet) connection; the other is for a wireless connection. Select the appropriate
LehighVPN
Connection entry for your situation, and then click the Connect
button.
- You will be prompted to enter an account Username and Password. Enter the
your Domain Username and password!

- Assuming the connection process is
successful, the dialog box will go away and an icon that looks like a padlock (
) will appear
in the System Tray at the lower right of your screen. Your connection is available and secure.
The VPN connection will be
terminated automatically after a period of time if there is no activity, so if
you’ve been away from your computer for a long while and you have problems with
network resources when you come back, check for the
icon in the System Tray. If it’s not there, simply reconnect.
- If you want to disconnect from the VPN,
simply right-click the
icon in the System Tray and select Disconnect
from the drop-down menu.
